Canas Island Wildlife Refuge

The Canas Island Wildlife Refuge is located in Los Santos Province, in the district of Tonosí. It includes an 8 mile stretch of beach which is the most important nesting site of sea turtles of the Pacific of Panama. This refuge also protects important ecosystems of mangroves, a habitat important to many marine species. The refuge is managed by a nearby town of fishermen, who together with the personnel of the ANAM, protect and handle the thousands of turtles that arrive at this coast every year.
