Cenegon del Mangle Wildlife Refuge

The Cenegon del Mangle Wildlife Refuge is located in Herrera Province, and consists of 2470 acres of coastal lagoons, wetlands and coastal marine environments in Parita Bay. This area is considered a flood zone, particularly in the winter months, due to the overflow of the Santa Maria River and to rising tides. In the dry season, the water disappears.

Small thermal wells are found in the Cenegon del Mangle Wildlife Refuge that were used in the past as baths with medicinal benefits. This area is preferred by marsh birds, including white herons and nocturnal herons. Mammals found in this refuge include otters and the cat of manglar (Procyon cuncrivorus). Reptiles that make this their home include enormous boa constrictors and crocodiles.
